For our learners who require additional support, we have co-taught classes, allowing students to have access to 2 teachers in several English and maths classes. Newman Catholic College offers an extensive range of extracurricular programs that cater to a variety of interests and talents. Our sporting academies feature programs in basketball, volleyball, soccer, and netball, designed to foster athletic skills and sportsmanship. The Dance Academy provides a platform for creative expression and technical development in various dance forms. Our Chess Club and a variety of music ensembles and bands offer students the chance to sharpen their strategic thinking and musical talents in a collaborative setting. The prestigious Duke of Edinburgh Award and our Robotics Club challenge students to develop new skills and engage in community service and engineering projects. Additionally, our calendar is punctuated with special programs such as debating, ICAS Maths, the JCU-Newman Maths Competition, and diving courses, ensuring that throughout the year, there are always opportunities for students to explore their interests and extend their learning beyond the classroom.

For our learners who are high achieving, we have High Potential Learning programs, excellence programs in STEM and Sport; as well as excellence classes in most core subjects (mathematics, English, science and HASS) and a range of Technology, Humanities, Science and Arts electives that offer extension and enrichment. For example, our Marine Science curriculum benefits immensely from the close association with JCU’s esteemed Marine Biology department. Teaching Tools: All classrooms are equipped with advanced AV systems, including interactive projectors and speakers. Our Soundfield systems distribute sound evenly, ensuring clarity and enhancing the auditory learning experience. Additionally, each space features ergonomic furniture designed to support student comfort and engagement throughout the educational journey.

Learning Management System: We utilise Canvas as our Learning Management System (LMS), providing an intuitive platform for educational engagement. Parents have real-time access to their child’s academic progress, including grades, teacher feedback, and detailed insights into each subject. Emerging Technologies: Our commitment to technological advancement is demonstrated through the availability of sophisticated tools such as 3D printers and scanners, drone technologies, and virtual reality systems. Overnight Excursions and International Trips: Our school offers optional overseas trips, such as a two-week Japanese cultural and language immersion trip, alongside regular interstate excursions, including visits to Canberra for civics studies and skiing trips to Perisher. Leveraging Local Geography: Utilising the rich natural resources of Far North Queensland, our programs integrate local geography into the curriculum. Marine Science students explore the Great Barrier Reef, while other courses utilise the world-class mountain bike trails nearby. These activities underscore the practical application of academic studies and highlight the natural beauty of our local environment.

Partnership with Local Parish: Our foundational partnership with the Holy Cross Parish exemplifies our commitment to community integration. Parishioners are welcomed to participate in local school events, and our school captains play an active role in assisting with the children’s liturgy. Families at Newman (F@N) Group: Our partnership with the Families at Newman group actively involves our parent body in the school community. This collaboration fosters a supportive network that enhances our educational programs and creates a welcoming community atmosphere that values parental input and engagement.

Yirrganydji Elders and other Prominent First Nations members: We are extremely grateful to our local Yirrganydji elders, Aunty Mercy Baird and Uncle Bernie Singleton Snr for their support in ensuring we are culturally responsive as an organisation. We also thank Professor Martin Nakata, Gavin Singleton and the Yirrganydji rangers for their support and wisdom in the development of our college.

Active Citizenship in the Cairns Community: We encourage our students to participate in outreach programs and community events across Cairns. These activities are designed to instil a sense of responsibility and community service, allowing students to apply their learning in meaningful ways and make a positive impact on the world around them.

Local Business Partnerships: We collaborate with a variety of local businesses that contribute significantly to our curriculum offerings. These partnerships include reef trips for Marine Science, engagements with aviation groups for Aerospace studies, and collaborations with local artists and Crankworx for mountain biking. Each partnership is carefully selected to enrich our curriculum and provide students with practical, hands-on experiences in their fields of interest and we are extremely appreciative of the support to the college from local industry.

Northern Beaches Heat Basketball Club: We are proud partners with the Northern Beaches Heat Basketball Club, which trains at our college and competes in the Cairns Basketball Association. This partnership provides our students with exceptional opportunities to engage in high-level sports and learn from experienced coaches, enhancing both their athletic and team-building skills.

Cairns Chess Club: In collaboration with the Cairns Chess Club, we host weekly chess sessions every Tuesday night at 6:30 PM. This initiative not only cultivates strategic thinking and problem-solving skills among our students but also invites the community into our school, promoting an environment of lifelong learning and intellectual engagement.

Language Group Collaborations: We host Italian, French, and Mandarin classes for adults, run by expert language instructors. These classes offer our advanced students unique opportunities to practice and enhance their language skills alongside adult learners, promoting cultural exchange and language proficiency.
