Health and Physical Education

At Newman Catholic College, our Health and Physical Education (HPE) curriculum is designed to empower students with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for leading active, healthy lifestyles. Our comprehensive program covers a broad range of topics including physical fitness, mental health, nutrition, and personal development. These engaging and dynamic classes allow students to participate in various sports and physical activities, enhancing their physical competencies and teamwork abilities.

Our curriculum integrates contemporary health issues and promotes lifelong wellness practices, encouraging students to make informed decisions about their health and wellbeing. Additionally, our program emphasises the importance of understanding the human body through physical activity and fitness, as well as exploring respectful relationships. With a strong focus on personal growth and community values, our HPE curriculum supports students in becoming well-rounded individuals who contribute positively to society, living by our college motto, "heart speaks to heart."

Year 7 Health & Physical Education

Year 7 Health & Physical EducationIn Year 7, students lay the foundation for lifelong fitness and wellbeing. They explore personal identity and teamwork through team games, swimming, and athletics. Nutrition education is complemented by engaging physical activities like AFL, Zumba, and striking sports. Students also develop essential protective behaviours and respectful relationship skills, with aquatics and risk-taking activities enhancing their confidence and safety awareness.

Year 8 Health & Physical EducationYear 8 focuses on building resilience and expanding physical competencies. Students dive into activities like invasion sports, athletics, and group fitness while developing their understanding of motor skills. Topics such as respectful relationships and risk-taking behaviours encourage informed decision-making. Hands-on learning through protective behaviours, Zumba, and aquatics ensures an exciting and well-rounded experience.

Year 9 Health & Physical EducationIn Year 9, students delve deeper into health and fitness concepts, with an emphasis on ethics in sport and tactical awareness. Activities like swimming, net sports, and volleyball/pickleball refine physical abilities, while sport psychology introduces them to the mental side of competition. Healthy relationships, community health, and dance are key themes, fostering a holistic understanding of personal and social wellbeing.

Year 10 Health & Physical EducationYear 10 students advance their physical and theoretical knowledge, exploring physical activity, fitness, and training principles. Through activities like athletics, basketball/netball, and invasion sports, they enhance their tactical awareness. The integration of community health and sport psychology strengthens their ability to lead and participate in diverse settings, preparing them for more specialised study in senior years.

Mountain Biking

OED Mountain Biking offers students dynamic, hands-on learning experiences in natural environments, blending physical activity with an appreciation for the outdoors. This program nurtures personal health, well-being, and a spirit of adventure through engaging mountain biking activities on school trails and nearby parks. Safety and skill development are central to the program, with a structured approach to progressive training and theoretical learning.

Students explore cross-disciplinary elements, including Aboriginal perspectives on land stewardship, conservation, and sustainability. Through direct engagement with nature, the program inspires lifelong enjoyment of outdoor activities.

Beginner - level students require no prior experience, with school-provided bikes available for use. Intermediate- level students need previous experience before enrolling.


Outdoor Education

Outdoor Education at Newman Catholic College supports our holistic approach to student development. Our Outdoor Education programs are delivered in our rich natural landscapes  to enhance learning experiences beyond the classroom. Outdoor Education incorporates a number of learning outcomes from a range of subjects such as Health and Physical Education, Geography, History, Science, Mathematics, English and Art. It is uniquely placed to teach cross disciplinary components of the curriculum such as Aboriginal perspectives of land and country, conservation, and sustainability. Our Outdoor Education curriculum is designed to cultivate resilience, self-confidence and a lifelong appreciation for the natural world. At Newman Catholic College, we believe that the best lessons are learned through exploration and adventure, fostering a deep connection to the environment and a well-rounded education for every student.

Outdoor Education empowers students to explore nature, develop essential life skills, and embrace adventure. Through hands-on activities, students learn to assess and manage risks, promote teamwork, and build leadership skills. They’ll gain an appreciation for the natural environment, tackle conservation challenges, and refine strategies for navigating the great outdoors safely and responsibly.

Sports Excellence

Years 7 to 9 Sports Excellence Program provides students with a structured pathway to develop their athletic potential through a balance of theoretical knowledge and practical application.

Students build a strong foundation in athletic development, focusing on anatomy and physiology, injury prevention, and strength and fitness training. They engage in Newman Sports Academies, Interschool Sporting Competitions, and local gala days, with opportunities to compete at State and National School Titles. The program encourages students to refine movement skills, develop performance strategies, and design personalised fitness plans to enhance their athletic progression. It also emphasises ethical sportsmanship, leadership, and collaboration.

Led by experienced HPE staff, the program includes weekly training sessions, strength and conditioning, functional fitness, and injury prevention, ensuring students are equipped with the skills and mindset needed for long-term success in sport.

Extra-curricular Activities

Students in Years 7 to 10 Health and Physical Education electives—Outdoor Education, Mountain Biking, Sports Excellence, and The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award—participate in a variety of enriching activities and excursions. These include adventure-based learning in natural environments, utilising local community spaces, and engaging with guest speakers and mentors from the fitness, outdoor recreation, and sports industries.

These experiences provide real-world insights, hands-on opportunities, and pathways to explore health, physical activity, and leadership skills, inspiring students to achieve personal excellence and develop a lifelong love for active living.
